A researcher on phyto-chemicals, searching for  phyto nutrients  from land to sea

I read this  aforementioned subject  from time to time in newspapers.  Therefore, I  want  to state my professional opinion on Ayurvedic Medicine and herbs.

I have a degree in integrated medicine from the State College of Ayurvedic Medicine in Kolkata (Asthanaga Ayurvedic College, (University of Calcutta)  one of the oldest Ayurvedic Institutions of  India).  After India’s Independence, each State used to have an Integrated Degree both in Ayurvedic and Western Medicine until mid 70s. Later, those doctors went through MBBS, which was  condensed in various States. When doctors started practicing western Medicine,  Central Government  and Central Council  of  Indian Medicine    had to discontinue integrated system and introduced a BAMS degree from late 70s in all States. The number of Government Ayurvedic Colleges are over 200 in India,  including 3 special Ayurvedic Universities, such as Gujrat Ayurvedic University in Jamnagar, National Ayurvedic Institute in Jaipur, Rajsthan, and BHU has a  large Undergraduate and Postgraduate Department.

Kerala’s Tourism is based on Ayurvedic Medicine and visitors from all over the World,  going there for Panchakarma Therapies.  Today, 80% of India’s population depend on our indigenous system of Ayurvedic Medicine. Government of India has formed a Department called AYUSH to oversee the education, research and advancement of Ayurvedic medicine in India.  Also in each State, there is a  Central Research Institute (CRI) or  Regional Research Institute (RRI) in Ayurvedic medicine. The demand of Ayurvedic medicine is growing day to day on an International level and plant based Biotech Industry is a new subject.

It is important that  both doctors and general public  must know Ayurvedic medicine not only deal with preparatory Ayurvedic formulas  with  Bhasma and  Rasayana, which may contain many natural steroids, impurities  and heavy metals  like   mercury, lead.  Many Ayurvedic authentic formulas have more than 50 or 100  ingredients and it is hard to get an analysis of  molecules, compound and structure of ingredients in such a product.

However single herb used in Ayurvedic medicine have many good therapeutic values like Aswagandha as an adaptogen, curcumin (haldi), fenugreek, psyllium (isabgul), neem, valerian, ocimum (tulsi), gugul and boswella, gymnema and 100 other herbs used in Ayurvedic medicine. Many of these herbal extracts  (phyto-chemicals or phyto-nutrients) are being used  widely in many health products in  USA, which as available in supermarkets, pharmacies to health food stores.

Government of India is fighting with many U.S. companies who have illegally trademarked some of  Indian medicinal plants.   Extensive clinical research are available on single herbs of Ayurvedic medicine.  These are small molecule drug and it works well in health food industry in USA and the World. Ayurvedic herbs have a  large market share after Chinese herbs. India’s export of Ayurvedic herbal Extracts is more than 1 billon   dollars in a year.

Unless a doctor is trained in Ayurvedic medicine it is hard to recognize an Ayurvedic herbal product in U.S. Health Food, drug store or Supermarket.  Ayurvedic individual medicinal plant standardized extracts  are  extensively used in health food industry. Let’s forget those preparatory Ayurvedic combination of  complicated Shastriya medication of  Ayurveda.  It is not possible to introduce those products in the U.S. market.

When people or media  talk about steroids in Ayurvedic medicine, it is not  true. Their opinion is wrong. I see a difference between a research exposure and an academic exposure scientist  and a layman in  plants medicine. It is a wrong comment.

We find 90% of drugs are derived from plant sources. Once a  plant chemical is identified as a remedy, it becomes  a  patent drug.  Thereafter, it is chemically synthesized  for mass production?

Morphine is  a plant (Opium poppy) used as a pain killer in Ayuvedic medicine 1000s of yrs back), is a derived alkaloid. Morphine identified as a derivative from plant

Today Texol is  a cancer drug (oncology drug). It is  a plant-based drug. The National cancer Institute (NCI) has several ongoing collaborative programs,  which screen plants for the possibility of new drugs.

  • Many hormones are steroids
  • Male hormones are steroids
  • Female hormones are steroids
  • There are animal steroids
  • There are synthesized steroids used in sports nutrition
  • There are  plants and herbal steroids (Phyto Chemicals)
  • There are  biological  synthesized steroids
  • Steroids are therapeutic
  • Amino-acids are steroids
  • Isolates are steroids
  • Cortisones are steroids

Only excessive Steroids are extremely bad and have  adverse action in our lifestyle

Ayurvedic medicine  is a 5,000 years age old medical science. Many medical theories were derived from Ayurveda. Both Charak Samhita and Sushruta Samhita are very old  with  vast knowledge  of  Ayurvedic medicine. It is a resource  encyclopedia  from India on today’s medical science to  pharmaceutical science.

The Ayurvedic science does not deal only with preparatory medicine of  Bhasmas like iron or Ferrous  Sulphate  (luha or mandur ) swarna (gold)  or Rasa like Basanta Kusumakar Batika or Makardhwaj. It has many good  philosophy in treating and having a better health life style than Allopathic system of medicine.  Taking wrong  pharmaceutical prescribed drugs more than 70,000 individuals die and many suffer from other health problems  each year in the United States alone. Why we should not try alternative health therapies like Ayurvedic medicine and  therapies too?

Ayurvedic medical science deals with food, nutrition, exercise, yoga, pranayama, meditation and nasal therapy (NETTI). These are all part of Ayurvedic medical science. Ayurvedic medicine provides  the  guideline  on  behavior  and  habits, which are important in maintaining  a good life style. It provides a stability of mind on stress management.

It is very hard for Western Doctors to learn Ayurvedic principles in a very short time.  Getting a clinical datas or having  lab test of a Ayurvedic Product (Rasayana) are not the part of Ayuvedic Medicine at all. Unless a person is well trained should  not practice Ayurvedic medicine at all. It is could be as bad as taking the wrong pharmaceutical products which is  a causative factor of many other health problems.

It is critical  that we do need the emergency medicine of Allopathic system as well as Ayurvedic medicine, which focuses on prevention and treatment. Ayurvedic medicine can not be compared or compromised with Western medicine either.
